Abstract
A telephone communication exchange has a reduced size and can handle communications between up to 16, 384 users. It comprises a switching unit and a control unit (2). The control (2) receives the numbers of the caller and the receiver, and controls the switching unit to establish communications between the caller and the receiver. The switching unit has laser diode light emitters (ET6) made up as a square matrix and which transmit a call signal modulated light, a receiving panel (6) made up as a square matrix of photodiodes (RT9) connected to the receiver and transmitting a signal from the modulated light, and a deflecting panel (4) also made up as a square matrix of hologrammes (T6). The deflecting panel has a photochromatic obstructor (8) which may allow light transmission or may prevent it by means of a panel (10) and a mirror (14).
