Abstract

Combustible sleeve for protecting sheel propellant charges against thermal effects, consists of a plastic foam with up to 80% of one or more secondary explosives. Enables propellant charges for large calibre weapons which can be fired at low rate without the need for a protective casing, to be used for automatic weapons at high firing rates. the combustible envelope may have a thickness 0.3-2.0 mm and a density 0.4-1.2 g/cm3. The envelope may have ribs of thickness twice that of the material between the ribs. A suitable wall thickness for the injection moulded envelope is 2-15 mm and the envelope may then form a container or cartridge case for the propellant charge.
