Abstract

Separation of light and heavy fractions of a fluid by centrifugal decantation of the heavy fraction in an imposed vortex motion. An inlet volute gravity feeds an annular sepg. space between a motor driven, rotary, hollow, vertical cylindrical outer rotor, and a coaxial, freely rotatable inner rotor, the incoming fluid being put into rotation by inwardly projecting, radial blades fixed to the top end of the outer rotor. The inner rotor is put into synchronous rotating with the outer by torque of rotating fluid in the sepg. space acting on radial blades fixed on the inner rotor. Separating fractions of a fluid by density differentiation, i.e. gases, liquids, free-flowing solid particles and mixtures of these, e.g. mineral sludges. The blades on the inner rotor serve as anti-turbulence baffles and improve the sepg. efficiency by ensuring that sediment does not remix.
