Abstract

The flywheel consists of two rotors (5) and (6). The inner rotor (5) has a low moment of inertia and is mounted directly on the splines (4) of the crankshaft (1). The outer rotor (6) has a high moment of inertia and is mounted on bearings (9) on the hub (10) of the inner rotor (5). A brake shoe (11) with brake lining (12) is retained in a slot in the rim of the outer rotor (6) and is normally pressed against the rim of the inner rotor (5) by a spring (13). At a pre-determined speed the centrifugal force due to the brake shoe (11) overcomes the spring force (13) so that the outer rotor is no longer driven and reduces the energy to accelerate the engine to higher speeds.
