Abstract

Interfacial supports between a metal pipe and a protective (PTFE) sheath where the supports comprise two superimposed but mutually staggered array of thin metal mesh or netting anchored to the metal pipe and submerged in the surrounding sheath. Used esp. for pipes coated as a protection against physical or thermal shock, e.g. for sealing compressors handling noxious materials such as uranium hexafluoride. The mesh physically anchors the surface sheath, inhibiting shear or creep andenhancing heat dissipation, more effectively than surfaces prepared by roughening, e.g. shot blasting. The mesh is anchored by brazing. Use of flexible metallic netting to provide anchorage windows 1-2.5 mm across.
