Abstract
A thermally insulating element, esp. for use in the nuclear industry, comprises a series of distinct layers of a thermally insulating material between an inner and outer envelope of aluminium or stainless steel, the material consisting of a metal wool or knitted fabric of Al or stainless steel, the layers being sepd. from each other by Al or stainless steel sheets, opt. perforated. Pref. >=1 underlayer of silica wool is incorporated. An insulation which has a good resistance to radioactivity and a structure which has a high mechanical strength is provided which permits repeated and rapid removal and replacement e.g. on a pipeline, resists washings with decontaminants and does not react chemically with these.
