Abstract

Xylene mixt. with a high p-isomer content produced by acid-catalysed transalkylation of toluene at 0-500 (pref. 20-400) degrees C and 1-100 (pref. 1-50) bars using pentamethylbenzene, hexamethylbenzene (prefd.), polymethyl condensed aromatics and/or complex molecules contg. a penta- or hexa-methylbenzene moiety. The catalyst is pref. amorphous silica-alumina, halogenated alumina, alumina-boron oxide, alumina-BF3 or a zeolite with >=7.5 angstroms pores. Mixts. contg. up to 90% p-xylene at >50% toluene conversion can be obtd. (cf. =65% selectivity at 10-30% conversion in prior art), giving increased yields in the sepn. o the p-isomer, p-Xylene can be oxidised to terephthalic acid for use in polyester prodn.
