Abstract
Mercury is eliminated from liqs. by passing the latter over a solid metallic reducing agent e.g., Fe or Cu for a contact time sufficient for all the mercury to accumulate on the reducer. The amalgam adheres to the reducer and the mercury is extracted by the usual methods. Contact with the mercurial liq. is maintained for two mins. to three hrs.; some 99.5% of the mercury is eliminated. In another method contact between the reducing agent and the liq. is effected either in a tank or trough or in a column with the inlet for the liq. at the top, so that the reducing metal is constantly immersed in the liq. Such an arrangement can continue to work for at least three months. The method is simple and gives a high yield of mercury; no filtration is required and both the mercury and the reducing metal can be recovered by distn.
