Abstract

A container handling system for a lorry, has the container (3) attached to a base frame (4) which can be supported on the ground by front legs (21) and rear jacks (23) so that the lorry can be backed underneath. The container also has a latch mechanism (34) at the front so that it can engage the upper sections (33) of a telescopic jack (12) attached to the chassis immediately behind the driver's cab. Forks (23) at the rear contain retractable legs. The lorry has a container support jack (14) pivotal about a transverse axis at the rear so that the container can be lowered or raised to allow retraction or extension of the rear container legs. A locating device (20) under the container just ahead of the latch mechanism fits over the hydraulic piston (14) to retain it in the loaded position.
