Abstract

The telephone handset houses a mercury switch which is positioned so that when the handset is held at a certain angle, the microphone is short circuited. This enables the user to cut off parts of his speech when required, without placing a hand over the mouthpiece and if required, without the knowledge of a third person whose is in the presence of the speaker. In one design, a special ampoule containing the electrodes and the bath of mercury, is of symmetrical shape, and located on the centre line of the instrument and is shaped to form a shalow bath each side of a deeper bath, and acting to prevent splashing.
