Abstract
Process for casting molten metal flowing from a vessel into the solidification cavity in a belt-casting machine uses two continuously rotating steel belts near to each other in the casting zone and forming the top and bottom of a rectangular mould. The height of the level of the bath fed to the mould is larger than the distance between the casting belts in the region of the peak of the belt-driving rolls. The bath of metal is pref. in contact with the ingot mould along an arc corresponding to an angle of 1-15 degrees, esp. 5-10 degrees, at least upstream of the upper driving roll. The melt can be fed into the mould via an open gutter or a closed jet. Used, e.g. for the casting of wide sheets of aluminium with a small thickness, where the "head" of molten metal prevents the occurrence of surface segregation, at least on one side of the sheet. Such segregation is undesirable because it leads to surface streaks after the cast sheet has been rolled and is pickled or anodised.
