Abstract

The shaft of this electrical jack is threaded and is moved in a longitudinal direction by a nut which, although free to rotate, is captive within a shaft extension of a torque motor. The motor is constructed around the shaft and its rotor is mechanically linked to the nut. An electrically operated brake is mounted on the shaft. Micro-switches prevent over-run of the mechanism. When the jack is energised, the brake releases and the rotor turns the nut which, in turn, moves the shaft longitudinally. This design overcomes the difficulties of jacks driven by internal motors and worm-driven gear boxes.
