Abstract

Molten salt bath for heat treatment of metal pieces at 450-700 degrees C, (esp. to provide nitrogen by diffusion into the metal), the main component of which is the active cyanate ion, used in amt. 20-65 wt. % w.r.t. the total mass, is characterised in that it contains hydroxyl ions from a hydroxide of an alkali(ne earth) metal in amt. 2 wt. % w.r.t. the wt. of the bath. The degeneration of cyanates in the bath is reduces to 0.5% bg wt. per 24 hrs. at operating temp. in the presence of hydroxyl ions, thus reducing both cyanide pollution and the amount of salt needed to maintain the bath compsn.
