Abstract

The manufacture of a thermostat utilising the dilation of wax to control a valve in a water cooling system for internal combustion engines is simplified by reducing the number of parts. A thermostat comprises a moulded casing (1) with a central hole (2) whose sides form the seat for a valve (6). A thermostatic capsule (3) operating on the dilation of wax principle is mounted upstream in the water flow and is held in the thermostat by two straps (5) forming part of the casing moulding. The capsule contains a moving shaft (7) which operates the valve (6) against a spring (9) and its support (10). A small hole (30) permits a low flow rate to facilitate degassing of the cooling system.
