Abstract

7-Amino-3-cephem-4-carboxylic acids of formula (I) (where R2 is an N-contg. heterocyclic residue), e.g. 7-amino-3-(1-methyl-5-tetrazolyl thiomethyl)-3-cephem-4-carboxylic acid, and their salts and esters are prepd. by reacting 7-(-ketoacylamino cpds. of formula (II): (where R1 is H, lower alkylthio or an N-contg. heterocyclic thio group) or a salt or ester thereof with a cpd. of the formula H2NR3 (III) (where R3 is a hydroxyl gp. or an amino gp. opt. substd. by alkyl or aryl) or a salt thereof. (I) are intermediates for antibiotic cephalosporins. (I) are obtd. in highly pure form.
