Abstract

An electrode material, suitable for use as positive electrode in an alkali cell, in which the negative electrode material is mainly ZN, comprises 100 (wt.) pts. NiO and 10-90 pts. MnO2, electrical conductor and binder. It can also contain 1.5-10% CoO or Bi2O3 or 0.1-5% Li cations. The conductor can be acetylene black, graphite, fine particles of Ag or Ni or a fluorocarbon, whilst the binder pref. is Portland cement, a thermoplastic resin which is resistant to alkaline media or a polyfluoroalkene. This electrode improves the cell capacity under high discharge loads, esp. at low temp., and gives a higher useful voltage and flatter discharge curve than usual for alkali-NiO-Zn cells.
