Abstract

A device for transporting nuclear fuel elements which still possess a high residual heat output comprises a vessel equipped with heat transfer tubes which are so arranged that they distribute the temperature over the surface of the vessel, thus reducing the temperature in the centre of the fission region; in this way, the heat generated inside the fuel element is dissipated to the surroundings over a large area. In the preferred embodiment shown, the irradiated fuel element comprises a fuel rod cluster, which still has a high residual heat output; the vessel is filled with liquid sodium up to a specific level and the heat transfer tubes each lie along a generatrix of the inner wall of the vessel.
