Abstract

Vinyl chloride is removed from latices contg. 1000-1500 ppm vinyl chloride and 5-50 wt% PVC (co)polymer, by (a) heating the latex or dispersion to 70-125 degrees C, or contacting it with at least one org. liq. at 25-125 degrees C, and (b) removing the vinyl chloride vapour from the latex. Process gives good removal of vinyl chloride (VCM) from PVC latices, which can be then be processed into polymers with zero or very low residual VCM concns., which is necessary to avoid exposing workers to harmful VCM vapour.
