Abstract

A lead accumulator with >=2 cells with a H2SO4 electrolyte has a bipolar electrode with an electrically conducting impermeable metal plate of Ti or a Ti alloy on one side and Zr or a Zr alloy on the other side, which forms a separating wall between 2 adjacent cells, with a support for the active PbO2 compsn. of the positive electrode of one cell on one side and a support for active Pb compsn. of the negative electrode of the adjacent cell on the other side. These surfaces can be joined directly, pref. by a metallurgical bond formed by hot rolling or explosion plating; or be sped. by another metal, pref. with a higher electric conductivity than the Ti (alloy) and/or Zr (allow), esp. Cu, Al or Fe. There pref. is a Pb layer between the first surface and the active PbO2 compsn. The support has a perforated structure. This arrangement allows the construction of lead accumulators of the truly bipolar type.
