Abstract

An electric motor has an automatic braking system, brought into operation once the power supply is switched off. The stator coils are arranged symmetrically around the central rotor which has a shorter axial length than the stator. In the remaining space and in the space away from the output shaft of the motor is an electromagnetic pair of annular poles, normally, in the power off state, held apart by a helical spring. The outermost pole is free to move axially on the motor shaft and carries a braking surface. Powering the motor energises the electromagnet pulling the braking surfaces apart. Removal of power allows the springs to bring the brake into operation.
