Abstract

In a pyrotechnic gas generator with a solid refrigerant, of reduced weight and bulk, capable of producing a large quantity of gas under pressure at a relatively moderate temp and in a very short time by combustion of a propellant and by cooling the combustion gases fromed by a solid refrigerant capable of absorbing a large part of the heat in the gases by decompsn. or by sublimation, and in which the generator consists of (i) a central cylindrically shaped combustion chamber contg. a propellant with an igniter device, and (ii) a cooling chamber outside and surrounding the combustion chamber and contg. at least one charge of solid refrigerant, the improvement whereby (iii) the downstreamed of the combustion chamber is maintained in communication with the upstream part of the cooling chamber by peripheral injection nozzles, a homogenising space also being provided between the downstream face of the propellant charge and the inlet to the nozzles, while the outlet end of the cooling chamber is maintained in communication with the outside by peripheral discharge nozzles or slits. Provides a compact gas generator e.g. for rapid inflation of safety equipment, in which the whole of the external wall is maintained at a more or less uniform temp.
