Abstract

Vitreous Ca silicate fibres of compsn. 10-60 (15-50) wt. % CaO, 35-75 (40-65) wt. % SiO2, 0-20 (1-20) wt. % Al2O3 and contg. a total of =2 wt. % impurities of iron oxides and alkali metals are used as reinforcement in a construction matl. contg. an inorg. binder or as reinforcement for plastics materials. The fibre compsn. may be modified by addn. of 0.1-10 (0.5-7) wt. % ZnO, ZnO2, Cr2O3 adn/or TiO2 or their mixts. or products contg. these oxides. The pref. additives is 2-5 wt. % ZnO. Fibres prepared from molten Ca silicate have a high resistance to the basic compsn. of inorg. hydraulic binders used in concretes, such as Portland cement, unlike prior art glass fibres.
