Abstract

The camshaft (1) is provided with cams (18 and 19) with profiles which vary along the axial length of the cam. The camshaft (1) has an enlarged diameter (2) which serves as a journal in the bearing (3) and which acts as a piston in the bearing. The outer end of the bearing (3) is sealed by the boss (10) of the driving sprocket (9) which is mounted on the plain diameter (5) and on the splines (12) of the camshaft. Lubricating oil from the engine oil pump flows through the orifice (31) and out through the drain hole (33). When the solenoid (34) is de-energised, the slider (35) seals off the oil drain allowing the oil pressure to rise in the space (32) which pushes the camshaft (1) to the left. A return spring (17) about the camshaft is fixed between the sprocket and a ring (16) on the camshaft.
