Abstract

A mould, esp. for treading or retreading pneumatic tyres, comprises a pair of mould plates each supporting a lateral mould for a tyre wall and capable of moving along the axis of the tyre to open or close; the tread moulding sectors move radially outwards to release the tyre as the mould opens and, as the mould closes, return to their closed position by the interaction of oblique surfaces on the mould plates on the one hand and on the sectors themselves on the other hand. The sectors are pref. suspended from the upper half-mould of a vertical-axis mould, so that as the plates move apart the sectors swing outwards by their own weight; their outward travel is limited by stops or abutments, esp. bearing against a mould wall having limited movement relative to its supporting plate. The sectors may also be supported from the bottom half of the mould and during opening are forced apart by a spring which separates their supporting side mould from its supporting plate. Accurate opening and closure motions are thus obtd., causing no deformation of the tyre, which is esp. important in the case of radials.
