Abstract

Disposable mould bodies are used for moulding soft lenses so that the initial moulding may be retained on one of the two original mould halves for subsequent surface treatment and cutting to size before being sepd. from the corresp. part of the supporting mould. The bodies may be used generally, but esp. suitable for mfr. f soft contact lenses from e.g. silicone moulding materials. Use of the original mould part to support the lens during e.g. surface shaping, polishing or glazing, ensures that the moulding is accurately centred on its support. Use of disposable, pref. thermoplastic mould tools or cavity liners allows lens shapes to be altered more readily than processes involving sequential use of profiled and polished metal master mould tools.
