Abstract

Thermoplastic cellular sheets are produced by conventional extrusion through a cylindrical die using >=2% micronised talc as nucleating agent and 0.5-1 5% low boiling (fluorochlorinated or chlorinated) hydrocarbon or an inert gas as blowing agent. The sheets have higher density than obtd. with the 'Direct Gasing' method, even when using a low content of blowing agent. The amt. of talc is pref. >=5% and particle size of the talc is 0.25-50 mu, pref. 5 mu. The blowing agent is pref. fluorochloro-methane and the thermoplastic is pref. polystyrene in powder or bead form.
