Abstract

Kraft wood pulp is bleached by 1-3 treatments with O3 and a final treatment with an alk. peroxide soln. in which the treatments are septd. by alkaline extractions, the effluent from these and the final treatment being used in subsequent bleachings. The process reduces fresh water consumption and avoids effluent dumping. The bleach effluent is pref. used at >=1 (a) the brown stock washer, to dissolve the recovery system smelt, (b) the lime mud washed and (c) the kiln stack scrubber.
