Abstract

The shoe has the lining attached to one face, while on the other face a layer is attached of material allowing some relative movement, so that any oscillations occurring when the brake is applied are damped out. The layer can be secured to the shoe by resilient binder material, or it can be in the form of a thin metal plate riveted to the shoe, the rivets passing through spring washers between layer and shoe. Alternatively it can consist of a metal spring plate with tongues bent over to secure it to the shoe. As a further alternative, it can be in the form of a mat of aligned metal fibres joined by a binder material sufficiently rigid to make it self-supporting, but allowing oscillation of the fibres in relation to each other, and of the mat in relation to the shoe.
