Abstract

A mounting for a plasma arc burner where the arc is between the burner and a workpiece, i.e. not between two electrodes in the burner, consists of a tool support on a machine tool and the burner being located so it is in a working position opposite the workpiece. The burner can be moved forward by a predetermined amt. w.r.t. the support in order to strike the arc, after which it is retracted to its original position. The mounting pref. consists of a hollow sleeve through which the burner projects towards the workpiece and compressed air is fed via a valve into an annular chamber to move the burner; alternatively, instead of the compressed air a spring-loaded lever can be used. The system is used for striking the arc when a plasma burner is mounted on a machine tool for pre-heating a workpiece which is electrically conducting and from which metal is removed.
