Abstract
Tyres have the sidewalls lined internally with an ancillary layer of rubber which is in compression when the tyre stands in an inflated but unloaded state. The design is esp. intended for radial ply carcass tyres. The compression stresses in the side walls generate a tension in the carcass which relieves and can even supercede internal pneumatic pressure for sustaining the inflated shape of the tyre. The sidewall stresses generate a circumferential stress in the sub-tread reinforcement which inhibits radial distension. As the tyre flexes during cornering the compressive stresses, are enhanced and self correcting for maintaining the proper carcass shape. Precompression increases the modulus of the rubber, hence its load bearing capacity, without increasing the hysteresis losses, and hence overheating, when flexing under high loads or speeds.
