Abstract

The two electrodes (15A, 15B) are embedded in a plug of non-conducting material (12), the plug being supported in the backplate (10) of the brake assembly. The plug and electrodes protrude into the brake pad so that when wear reaches a given level the electrodes are shorted out, and an indicator activated (18 to 22). Using two electrodes helps reduce the chances of accidental activation of the system, and can allow for uneven wear patterns. Two plugs can be used, each with one electrode. The electrodes can be simple wires, perpendicular to the face of the pad, or parallel to the face. One electrode can be placed to form a loop round the other.
