Abstract
The shaft is supported by a number of bearing pads (2) which are mounted on spherical seats (3) in a surrounding ring (1). The radial positions are adjusted using shims (4). Each pad has a hole through it (6) from its front face to a cavity (8) between the pad and the seat. This hole is positioned so that the maximum hydrostatic pressure of the lubricant between pad and shaft is transmitted to the cavity, balancing the forces applied to the pad. Sealing rings (7) prevent leakage of the oil. The lower seats have holes (9) through which oil pressure can be supplied during starting operations, until necessary hydrostatic pressure is established.
