Abstract

It is necessary to decrease the weight of undersea piping during laying to prevent the formation of sharp radius curves and subsequent kinks. As the piping (3) is fed from the stern of the ship it is coupled to a flexible support tube (11). The tube is fed between rollers (5) (sealing the tube) and is connected to two switched fluid reservoirs, one containing water (P) and the other buoyant fluid (S), with specific gravity less than that of water, and immiscible with water. The tube is initially filled with buoyant fluid but as laying proceeds, the support tube is gradually filled with water, this lying in the part on the sea bed and the buoyant fluid giving support in the part between boat and sea bed.
