Abstract
Used lubricating oil is regenerated by treatment with (a) H2O at 200-500 degrees C; (b) H2O4; and (c) an activated earth. The H2O treatment in step (a) reduces the amt. of H2SO4 required in step (b) and also increases the oil recovery yield. Step (a) can be effected by (i) passing an oi-H2O mixt. through a tubular furnace at 300-500 degrees C with a contact time of 1-60 sec, or (ii) introducing steam into a heated vessel contg. the oil at 220-425 degrees C for 15-120 min. The prefd. treatment temp. is 220-425 degrees C, and the vol. ratio of H2O (as liq.) to oil is pref. 0.001-1:1. The treatment can also be affected in the presence of an alkali (ne earth) metal oxide, hydroxide or carbonate (esp. lime).
