Abstract

Glass ceramic articles esp. tiles for covering walls, floors etc. surface treated on their back surfaces to make them rough, are made by melting of a devitrifiable glass ceramic compsn. casting between rolls, and rolling out of the sheet; deposition of a surface layer on the upper face of the glass sheet, and heate treatment in which (a) adhesion is effected by penetration and incrustation of grains of sand projected onto the lower face of the glass sheet and devitrification of the glass by nucleation and crystallisation and heat treatment of the surface layer deposited on the upper surface. Finally the lining is cut into convenient sized pieces. The devitrification and heat treatment may be combined or reversed in order according to the props. of the glass ceramic. On sticking such tiles to a wall or floor surface, adhesion is improved.
