Abstract

New 'aluminium halohydrates', comprising substances contg. Al, O, H and halogen (F, Cl, Br or I) with characteristic IR spectra (given in the specification), are prepd. by (a) allowing Hg to penetrate into high-purity Al in an amt. of 5 (pref. 4) wt. % in the presence of an H+ source; (b) reacting the resulting reactive Al with an aq. soln. of HX (X=F, Cl, Br or I) at 93.3 degrees C; and (c) isolating the liq. product. The products can be used in the same way as conventional Al halohydrates, e.g. as antiperspirants, as waterproofing agents for textiles and for the prodn. of absorbents and catalysts; in addition, the chloro-, bromo- and esp. iodohydrates have antimicrobial activity (e.g. against Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococci) and can be used as antiseptics, and the bromohydrate can also be used as a flameproofing agent for wood, fabrics and paper. The liq. products have a stable pH of 4.2-4.3 (cf. 3.9 for conventional products) and can be obtained practically free of AlX3 by-products; they can be micronised by spray-drying to give fine powders (99% 44mu) with a low moisture content (=8%).
