Abstract

Support sheet is metallised by passing through a lamination nip together with a plastic film which is premetallised on one face, while a melt adhesive is extruded into the interface between the sheet to be coated and the metallised face of the film. The coating is transferred to the interfacial adhesive, and the previously metallised film is subsequently peeled away. Used for transferring and bonding a metallic coating to thin sheets of e.g. paper, cardboard, film, woven or non-woven textiles, esp. to relatively thin and flexible materials. Coating transfer is very uniform and the presupport film is re-usable. Transferred coating is resistant to cracking if folded. The interfacial material is pref. an olefinic polymer, esp. polyethylene, polypropylene or their copolymers or ionomers. The bonding agent should be extruded at 100-350 degrees C.
