Abstract

Sectioning of rods of tubes in a bundle particularly a bundle of nuclear fuel elements, comprises first removing the tubes from the bundle, at least one then being advanced step-wise but being clamped and immobilised between the advancing strokes during which time a section is sheared off. Pref. after release from its bundle the fuel rods are brought into contact with each other to form at least one layer and while clamped and immobilised are sectioned in small number groups e.g. 1-5, by a cutting tool moving almost perpendicularly to the plane of the layer. In contrast to the known sectioning units in which a complete bundle is sectioned by a guillotine, a rotary cutter may be used which is small and easily introduced through the biological shield of the cell in which they are sectioned and in which the sections are subsequently dissolved. Problems associated with the elasticity of a bed of a large number of previously cut sections are avoided.
