Abstract

The sealing material is suitable for operating temperatures of the order of 600 to 700 deg.C. In a ball valve the sealing material is packed between the metal rings around the spindle and between the ball valve flanges and the pipe. The material may be packed tightly and the joints made tighter by pulling on the bolts or the gland screw. The material is a carbon fibre mixed with graphite and is compacted along the plane giving the greater strength to the material. The compaction is typically enough to reduce the thickness of the sheets of sealing material by about 20%.
