Abstract

A high cylindrical structure (2) comprises four sections (4, 6, 8, 10) on which are attached narrow reference strip reflectors (12, 14, 16, 18) for vertical alignment. The sighting instrument comprises a laser (20) source whose output is directed downwards through a semi-transparent mirror (22) towards a rotatable mirror (24). This mirror rotates to produce a vertical reference axis sweep which passes through the reflecting reference elements on the structure. Light reflected from the elements is directed by the rotatable mirror onto the semi-transparent mirror then through a lens (28) onto a horizontal photodiode array (30). Signal processing circuits and an indicator (36) are contained in a box (32).
