Abstract

Water is injected into the cylinder compression chambers at a temperature higher than 100 deg. C and rapidly vapourised. Electrical resistances can be used to heat the water, and a steam condenser can be connected to the supply pipes from pump to injector, which can be so designed as to give rapid vapourisation. The design avoids injection of hot water mixed with steam into the cylinders. The heated water is atmised before injection when it impinges on several metal plates which form a skirt around the injector opening. The plates are at the same temperature as compressed gas in the cylinder and cause rapid vapourisation.
