Abstract

The joint is for use at high temperatures and pressures, particularly in internal combustion engines, and is without loop portions, its sealing surfaces being of material with an ash formation rate of not more than 10% when heated in air to 800 deg.C for 10 minutes. It defines one or more openings working in conjunction with one to be sealed, and has loading devices near the opening periphery, to allow differential loading to be exerted on it in service. It can be of laminated construction, with a core plate covered with layers of the sealing material. The loading device can be in the form of a sealing plate enclosing the opening, a profiled intermediate layer, a wire embedded in the joint body, a thickened portion of the core plate, or a metal or ceramic material insert.
