Abstract

Process for the destruction of the foliage of potatoes is by the application of a mixture of a diquat (1,1'-ethylene-2,2'-bipyridilium) or paraquat (1,1'-dimethyl-4,4'-bipyridylium) salt and a photosynthesis inhibitor chosen from urea and triazine herbicides. Destruction of potato foliage facilitates mechanical harvesting of the potatoes, stops propagation of potato mildew (Phytophthora infestants) and controls the size of seed potatoes. The disadvantages of defoliation with dessicants are (a) browning of the vascular tissue and (b) necrosis at the point where the stoton enters the tuber which may lead to secondary bacterial and cryptogamic rot i.e. stem-rot. Use of the photosynthesis inhibitor avoids the basal necrosis.
