Abstract
The head-piece is fixed to the end of a long handle, and may be in the shape of the required brand-mark, for example in the shape of a letter. The branding surface coming into contact with the animal's skin, has a raised edge running the length of the mark. On each side of the ridge is an adjacent surface extending to the side edge of the head-piece. The raised ridge is the concentration area for the low temperature, and the adjacent surface as a cooler area, which may be flat, sloping, convex or concave. The animal's skin is first prepared by shaving it close. It is then brushed clean and is then moistened with alcohol. After a first application of the branding iron, the branding iron is cooled in liquid nitrogen, so that the process lasts, depending on the animal's age, from six to forty-five seconds.
