Abstract

In prodn. of bonded glass-fibre mats (a) the glass fibres are treated with an aq. soln. of 0.02-2.5 (0.1-1.5) wt. % of a cationic surfactant with mol. wt. >150 and with cationic properties provided by an organic or salt unit contg. N, S P or Sb, (b) the treated fibres are cut into lengths, (c) the cut fibres are slurried in a soln. of 0.001-0.05 wt. % of a cationic surfactant, (d) the fibres are formed into a fabric or felt and treated with a binder and (e) the binder is hardened. The use of a viscosity builder in the slurry is avoided, or the amt. is lower. The concn. of the surfactant in the slurry is less. The process can be carried out continuously in a closed system, since insol. residues are not formed in the slurry; the aq. phase from the slurry can therefore be recycled.
