Abstract

A positive feed device for a yarn comprises a driven roller having peripheral grooves and a pair of arms whose adjacent ends are pivoted on axes parallel with the axis of rotation of the roller and whose free ends are provided with yarn guides through which the yarn is threaded. The pivoted ends of the arms have gear wheels which interengage, and a drive gear meshing with one of the gear wheels can be rotated by e.g. a ram to cause the arms to pivot to a feed position in which the yarn passing from one guide to the other is maintained in one of the peripheral grooves on the roller and is held in contact with the roller surface over a predetermined arc length. The device is used to supply yarn to small diameter circular knitting machines used for knitting stockings or panty hose. Yarn is fed at constant rate and under constant tension, thereby providing a more uniform knit particularly in the visible regions of the stockings or hose.
