Abstract

Filter for liqs. has an inlet into an outer chamber which surrounds an axial extension of a tubular cylinder, the extension having radial perforations screened with filter mesh, while the cylinder projects outside the chamber to be provided with a radial outlet for filtered liq. Inside the cylinder, a piston is positioned normally in an inactive role on the far side of the outlet from the perforations; the piston is fixed to the rod of an external actuator, e.g. pneumatic or hydraulic, and a piston rod extension passes through the end of the cylinder to carry a discharge valve fitted in the bottom of the chamber. As the filter mesh becomes blocked, the rise in pressure in the outer chamber is sensed and used to initiate a downward stroke of the piston; this cuts off the outlet, opens the discharge value and expels filtered liq. from the cylinder back into the outer chamber, thus back-flushing the mesh. Used for filtering turbid liquids. Device is completely automatic, self-cleaning, and long-lasting filter mesh. Very brief interruption of filtration is obtd. since no flow valves have to be reset.
