Abstract
Optical fibres providing illumination bear against the cornea surface on a flat annular zone halfways between the cornea tip and the plane of the iris at less than 15 deg. A thick lens system has an inner concave face bearing against the front cornea surface, with a heavily curved lens having a refractive index greater than 1.65. The thickness of the lens system is greater than the radius of curvature at the apex of the external convex lens face. The external face of the heavily curved lens can be spherical, and the field illuminated by the optical fibres can be limited so there is no light leakage to the front of the cornea against which the lens bears.
