Abstract

A boat, to collect oil slicks floating on the water surface, consists of a hull, such as a catamaran, which carries in the centre three endless vertical belt conveyers side by side. These can be lowered just below the water level and pick up the oil because of their greater adhesion than water, and take it to the top pulley where scrapers and chutes remove it to containers. Such a boat need not be turned round because the belt conveyor can be made reversible. When steel strips are used as belts, the oils collection efficiency can be as high as 100%.
