Abstract

Injection unit comprising a vertical barrel and ram system with three stages: an injection chamber from which material is discharged by pressure from the leading face of a reciprocating ram; a melt chamber of annular and/or conical form where material is plasticized by shear between the stationary chamber walls and the rotating surface of the concentric ram; and a consolidation chamber where material is compressed and transfered downwards towards the melt chamber by a secondary ram concentric with the first but reciprocating independently of the first ram. The amount of shear heating can be controlled via the rate of rotation of the ram independently of the material throughput which is a function of the reciprocation cycle, allowing more ready optimisation of processing conditions than in screw injection moulding machines where these functions are confounded.
